As some might remember or for those born years after, today is the anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster. Today the Ukrainian President, Viktor Yanukovich is to inaugurate the construction of a new 1.2 billion euro sarcophagus to hold the remains of the reactor which exploded.
It was a combination of flawed design and operator error which caused the blast and produced a radioactive cloud.
Chernobyl’s reactors were shut down and eventually decommissioned . Reactor four was initially encased in an unstable concrete shell. The more permanent casing should be completed by 2015. Let’s hope and pray that the new sarcophagus won’t be like the last which I think has caused more damage than good.
Also please add in your prayers and thought for the thousands of post-Chernobyl victims that suffer the most horrific illnesses because of the nuclear fallout, these diseases are mainly cancer.
Remember that nuclear disasters are only a few minutes away if handled by the wrong persons and can never be erased or remedied. Tell your loved ones you love them or help a charity out. As patronizing as it may sound but too many of us take our lives, freedom and clean air for granted. In Belarus, Ukraine and parts of the Russian border there the people will suffer for generations.
Bright blessings to all that read this ♥
